THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME THE PIG & WHISTLE

The name, Pig & Whistle, is a very common pub name in the United Kingdom with over 100 pubs using it. The derivation of this name has many colorful legends, but the following is the best of the legends & we're sticking to it! Many hundreds of years ago, public drinking houses(called pubs today) would store their freshly brewed beer in large vats in the cool basements below their taverns. Whenever they needed to replenishtheir stocks of beer at the bar counter, they would issue one of the junior barstaff with a large vessel (called a 'poig', later changed to 'pig') and send him downstairs to collect more beer. He would be instructed to whistle all the way down & all the way back to ensure that he didn't drink any of the beer during the errand. And that is how we get the name the Pig & Whistle.
